Why Do Shingles Curl? Causes and What to Do

A curled shingle is more than a cosmetic problem. Once the edges lift or the tabs begin to cup, wind-driven rain can get beneath the roofing surface. Homeowners often ask, why do shingles curl, because the answer helps determine whether a repair will protect the roof or whether replacement is the safer investment.

In Ottawa, roofs face long winters, freeze-thaw cycles, high winds, heavy rain, and strong summer sun. Those conditions can expose weaknesses in aging materials and poor installation. The key is to identify why the curling started before water damage spreads to the roof deck, attic insulation, ceilings, or exterior trim.

Why Do Shingles Curl on a Roof?

Shingles generally curl for one of two reasons: they are reaching the end of their service life, or something in the roofing system is causing them to wear out too soon. Curling may look like raised corners, called clawing, or like shingle edges that turn upward, often called cupping.

A few isolated curled shingles do not always mean the whole roof has failed. Wind damage, a lifted nail, or a localized ventilation issue can affect one area. When curling appears across several slopes or throughout the roof, it is usually a sign of broader age-related wear or an installation problem that deserves a professional inspection.

Age and weather exposure

As asphalt shingles age, the oils that help keep them flexible gradually dry out. The material becomes brittle, shrinks slightly, and loses its ability to lie flat. Sun exposure accelerates this process, especially on south- and west-facing roof slopes.

Ottawa winters add another layer of stress. Snow and ice sit on the roof, temperatures rise and fall quickly, and repeated expansion and contraction can work against shingles that are already losing flexibility. A roof near the end of its expected lifespan may begin curling after a particularly harsh season, even if it has not leaked before.

Installation errors

Even high-quality shingles can fail early when they are not installed according to manufacturer requirements. Common issues include incorrect nailing, inadequate nails, poor fastening placement, insufficient underlayment, or shingles installed over a damaged roof deck.

Installing shingles in cold conditions without proper sealing can also create problems. The adhesive strips need suitable conditions to bond correctly. If shingles never seal as intended, wind can lift the edges and begin a cycle of loosening and curling. A roof should be installed with the full system in mind, including flashing, ventilation, ice and water protection, and proper drainage.

Moisture beneath the shingles

Water that gets under shingles can cause the roof deck to swell, warp, or deteriorate. As the decking changes shape, the shingles above it may buckle, curl, or appear uneven. Leaks around chimneys, skylights, plumbing vents, valleys, and wall intersections are common places for this to start.

Moisture can also come from inside the home. Bathroom fans that vent into the attic rather than outdoors introduce warm, humid air where it does not belong. Over time, that moisture can compromise the decking and shorten the useful life of the roof.

Layered shingles and uneven surfaces

Installing new shingles over old shingles may save time upfront, but it can create long-term issues. The second layer may not sit flat, can retain extra heat, and makes it harder to identify damaged decking underneath. Local building requirements, roof structure, and the condition of the existing roof all matter, but a full tear-off often provides a more reliable result.

Curling can also occur when shingles were installed over uneven or deteriorated decking. A sound, smooth deck gives shingles the stable base they need to perform properly through changing weather.

Is a Curled Shingle Roof an Urgent Problem?

It depends on the extent of the curling and whether the roof is already allowing water in. A single curled tab after a windstorm may be repairable if the surrounding shingles are in good condition and replacements can be matched. A roof with widespread curling, missing granules, cracking, bald spots, or visible sagging needs more immediate attention.

Do not wait for a ceiling stain to treat a roof issue seriously. By the time water appears indoors, it may have already traveled along framing or insulation. Early repairs are usually less disruptive than repairs made after the deck, fascia, soffit, or interior finishes have been affected.

Signs that call for a timely roof inspection include:

  • Curling across multiple areas of the roof

  • Shingles that are cracked, loose, or missing

  • Granules collecting heavily in gutters or at downspouts

  • Dark staining, soft spots, or sagging roof sections

  • Water stains in the attic or on upper-floor ceilings

  • Ice dams, attic frost, or noticeable condensation in winter

Can Curled Shingles Be Repaired?

A repair may be the right choice when the damage is limited and the roof still has useful life left. Replacing a small number of wind-damaged shingles, resealing lifted tabs, correcting a flashing issue, or addressing a minor leak can restore protection without replacing the entire roof.

However, curled shingles rarely flatten permanently once they have aged and dried out. Trying to glue down widespread curling may hide the symptom for a short time, but it does not restore flexibility or stop ongoing deterioration. If curling is present throughout an older roof, replacement is often the more dependable and cost-effective decision.

A proper assessment should look beyond the visible shingles. The condition of the deck, attic ventilation, insulation, gutters, flashing, and roof penetrations all affect whether a repair will hold up. This is where experienced workmanship matters. Replacing shingles without correcting the cause can lead to the same problem on a newer roof.

What Homeowners Should Do Next

Start with a visual check from the ground. Look for lifted edges, uneven rows, missing shingles, or large areas with a faded, worn appearance. Use binoculars if needed, but do not climb onto the roof. Curled shingles can be brittle, and walking on them can cause further damage or create a safety risk.

Next, check the attic on a dry day. Look for daylight at roof penetrations, damp insulation, dark marks on the roof deck, or signs of condensation. If you notice active dripping, wet insulation, or a new ceiling stain, arrange service promptly and protect the area below the leak.

Keep gutters and downspouts clear as well. Good drainage will not cure curling shingles, but clogged eavestroughs can hold water at the roof edge and add stress during freeze-thaw weather. If water is spilling over gutters or ice is building at the eaves, the roofline should be evaluated as a complete system.

Preventing Premature Shingle Curling

The best prevention begins with a correctly built roof system. That means quality shingles suited to local conditions, sound decking, proper underlayment, secure flashing, adequate ice and water protection, and balanced attic ventilation. Skipping any of these details may reduce initial cost, but it can lead to repeat repairs later.

Routine inspections also help homeowners catch small concerns before they become major leaks. Inspect after severe windstorms, keep tree branches from rubbing against the roof, and address damaged flashing or blocked vents promptly. If your roof is approaching 15 to 20 years old, an honest condition assessment can help you plan ahead rather than make a rushed decision after a leak.
